BEN

we were gathered around
the four of us
in standard party circle
beers in hand
when he interjected

“the hardest thing
i’ve ever had to do
is to deliver a flag
to my friends’ parents.
i had to stand there
saluting
straight faced
while i waited for them
to finish balling hysterically
when just days earlier
my friend had said to me
if i die
i want you to deliver
the flag to my parents.”

it came out of nowhere.
nothing prompted him
telling us this.
there was no rhyme
or reason
to it being entered into
the conversation
but i’m glad it was.

amongst the alcohol
and stupid balloons
the chit-chattering
and the laughter
all that laughter
we needed a moment
of truth.
a moment
of raw
visceral
unapologetic
humanity.

ROY G. BIV

in the beginning
everyone said she was crazy
a crazy girl
stay the fuck away from that one

she was off doing her own thing
all the time
like she was creating some way
of enjoying herself
she was trying to build a bunker
to prepare for the shit storm

stay the fuck away from that one

but I’ve never been
a very good listener

she was listening to grindcore pop opera
while she was mopping the floor

she was napping beneath
the register counter

and I came to visit her
and honestly
it was pretty quick moving from there
we acknowledged the insanity in one another
we went crazy together

we purchased a potentially fleeting moment together

and sure enough
every day
someone else goes insane
or as an alternate option
they embrace their own breed of
person

we went crazy together
wrapped in folie au deux
the world had more colors
if only it realized it

WORLD’S SMALLEST VIOLIN

with the recession
we had to sell the summer home
now i can’t decide
whether to vacation
in the caymans or
the keys

i’m far too stressed
i couldn’t get
overnight shipping on my
organic sleep mask
so i’ve been fairly cranky
as of late

evelyn says johnny is
a wreck because he didn’t make
the fencing team and
god
next time i’m out with her
if she orders
one more half dry
half wet martini
i swear to jesus
i am going to hit her
in the head
with my non-stick
frying pan
that i got
at sur la table
last week.
(damn thing
wasn’t even on
sale.)

the compute broke
so i had to do all my
online shopping
on my ipad
while this foreign man
from dell
spent several hours
trying to fix my
computer before finally
accusing me of
spilling raspberry mojito
on the hard drive.
the nerve.

i turned on the
television today.
apparently something’s
going on in
syria,
aurora, colorado;
apparently something’s
going on in
the middle east.

i had to turn
the damn thing off.

i just sat there
in silence
waiting for my nails
to dry.
